A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure aimed at removing or modifying a frenulum, a small fold of tissue that connects different parts of your mouth. This procedure can significantly improve oral function and overall dental health. There are two primary types of frenectomy: lingual frenectomy and labial frenectomy.
A lingual frenectomy, or tongue release, involves the removal of the frenulum that connects the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. When this frenulum is too short or thick, it can cause a condition known as ankyloglossia, or tongue-tie. Tongue-tie can restrict the tongue’s movement, making it difficult for individuals to speak, eat or chew properly. If you or your child experience these difficulties, our periodontist may recommend a lingual frenectomy to enhance tongue mobility and improve oral function.
On the other hand, a labial frenectomy, or lip release, focuses on the frenulum that connects the upper lip to the gums above the upper front teeth. An overly tight or large labial frenulum can contribute to several issues, including gum recession, a gap between the front teeth (diastema) and challenges for those wearing dentures. By removing or adjusting this frenulum, a labial frenectomy can prevent these problems and promote better oral health.
The frenectomy procedure is straightforward and typically completed in a single visit to our office. During the treatment, our experienced periodontist will ensure that you or your child are comfortable and at ease. We use local anesthesia to minimize any discomfort, and the procedure itself is usually quick, often taking only a few minutes. After the frenectomy, we will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to support proper healing and recovery.
