An oral biopsy is a diagnostic tool used at our dental office to identify various conditions affecting your oral health. If you exhibit symptoms such as unexplained sores, lesions, white or red patches or persistent swelling in your mouth, our periodontist may recommend an oral biopsy. This procedure involves removing a small sample of tissue from your mouth and sending it to a lab for detailed analysis.
Common conditions that can be diagnosed through an oral biopsy include:
- Ulcers, sores or lesions that do not heal
- White or red patches on the gums or inside the mouth
- Persistent swelling or lumps in the mouth
- Changes in gum tissue that may result in loose teeth or ill-fitting dentures
Our periodontist may use imaging technology, such as X-rays, CT scans or MRIs, alongside the biopsy to provide a comprehensive view of your oral health.
During the biopsy procedure, the area from which the sample is taken will be sterilized to prevent infection. A local anesthetic will be administered to ensure your comfort. In some cases, where the sample site is difficult to access, a general anesthetic may be used to allow you to sleep through the procedure, avoiding any discomfort. A small tissue sample will then be removed from your mouth for analysis.
Post-procedure, your mouth may remain numb for several hours due to the anesthetic. Once the numbness subsides, you can resume your regular activities and normal diet. The biopsy site might be sore for a few days, and we advise against brushing the affected area until the soreness diminishes. If you experience prolonged bleeding, swelling or pain beyond a few days, please contact our office immediately.
The tissue sample will be analyzed in a laboratory, and based on the results, our periodontist will develop a treatment plan to address any diagnosed conditions, ensuring the restoration of your oral health. This plan will be carefully tailored to meet your unique oral health needs.
