Gingivectomy and open flap debridement are key procedures for managing advanced periodontal disease and ensuring your oral health is maintained at its best.

Gingivectomy is a surgical procedure aimed at removing diseased gum tissue and reducing periodontal pockets that harbor bacteria. Periodontal disease, caused by the accumulation of bacteria and plaque, leads to inflammation and infection of your gums. If left untreated, this can result in significant damage to your teeth and supporting structures. Gingivectomy helps to:

  • Reduce bacterial spread
  • Halt bone loss
  • Improve your ability to maintain oral hygiene at home

During a gingivectomy, our periodontist will administer local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. The infected gum tissue is carefully removed, exposing the tooth roots for thorough cleaning. Scaling and root planing are often performed to remove plaque and tartar from the roots. Afterward, the area is treated with an antimicrobial agent to eliminate any remaining bacteria. Your gums are then sutured to promote healing and prevent further shifting.

Open flap debridement is another critical procedure for treating severe periodontal disease. When nonsurgical treatments are insufficient, this method allows for a more comprehensive cleaning of the roots and removal of infected tissue. The procedure begins with local anesthesia to numb the area. The gums are then gently lifted, creating a flap to access the tooth roots and bone. Our periodontist will meticulously clean the roots and remove any plaque, tartar and infected tissue. After the cleaning, the gum tissue is repositioned and sutured back into place.

Both procedures are designed to restore the health of your gums and teeth. After undergoing gingivectomy or open flap debridement, you may experience some temporary sensitivity. However, with proper care and follow-up appointments, you can expect a significant improvement in your oral health. It is crucial to maintain good oral hygiene practices and attend regular dental checkups to prevent the recurrence of periodontal disease.
