Orthodontic tooth exposure is a common procedure used to help teeth that have not properly erupted into their natural position. This situation frequently occurs with canine teeth, also known as eyeteeth. These teeth are essential for your dental health and aesthetics, playing a crucial role in your bite and the appearance of your smile. When a canine tooth is impacted, meaning it is stuck in the bone or gum tissue, it can cause several issues, including misalignment of adjacent teeth and potential cyst formation.

Our periodontist is experienced in managing impacted teeth through a procedure known as orthodontic tooth exposure. The process begins with a thorough examination, including X-rays, to determine the exact position of the impacted tooth and to assess the surrounding teeth and structures. This initial assessment helps us develop a personalized treatment plan for you.

To expose the impacted tooth, our periodontist will first remove the gum tissue covering the tooth. In some cases, this simple exposure is enough to allow the tooth to erupt naturally over time. However, if further intervention is needed, we will bond an orthodontic attachment to the exposed tooth. This attachment is connected to a small chain, often made of gold, and a rubber band. The chain and band apply gentle, consistent pressure to guide the tooth into its proper position within the dental arch.

This process of moving the tooth can take several months to a year, as it is essential to apply the force slowly and carefully to avoid damaging the tooth or surrounding structures. Once the tooth has been moved into its correct position, our periodontist will evaluate the health of the surrounding gum tissue. In some cases, minor gum surgery may be required to ensure the gum tissue is healthy and capable of supporting the tooth for normal chewing and oral hygiene.

Orthodontic tooth exposure is a delicate procedure, but it is highly effective in bringing impacted teeth into proper alignment, improving both function and aesthetics.
